The City of Cairo Community Service Department employs 25 full time employees.

The City of Cairo operates a solid waste disposal facility for the City of Cairo and Grady County.

The Landfill is permitted by the Environmental Protection Division of the State of Georgia, under Federal subtitled requirements. The permit allows for disposal of Municipal Solid Waste, Non-Hazardous Industrial Waste, and Construction/Demolition Waste. No hazardous waste is permitted. An inert burial area is operated for materials that qualify as inert.

The landfill area has been in operation since June 7, 1978 and has been continuously upgraded as required to meet environmental regulations.

The landfill facility is located on 6th Avenue N. W. The site is open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays and from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturdays.
