Department
The Cairo Fire Department answers an average of 20-22 calls a month. This department responds to fire related emergencies, vehicle accidents, hazardous material calls, and numerous non-emergency type calls. The Fire Personnel are mandated to train 240 hours a year. The staff works 24 hours and is off 48 hours. The City of Cairo Fire Department conducts pre-fire plan inspections of businesses. They are also required to annually perform hydrant maintenance, hose testing, and fire apparatus pump testing. The fire prevention program is active. Firefighters constantly visit schools to speak with the children. They visit civic clubs and organizations, and church groups. They believe it is easier to prevent a fire than to fight a fire. The Fire Department dedicated a new central fire station in 2001. The facility is 15,000 square feet and can accommodate six (6) emergency vehicles. For more information, please contact the Cairo Fire Department Fire Chief Donald Towne at (229) 377-3293 or email dtowne@cairocity.net. City of Cairo
