Land Application
System (LAS) Site
531 Wright Road
(229) 378-3092
The City
of Cairo Land Application Site (LAS) receives treated effluent from
the City of Cairo Wastewater Treatment Plant. The LAS site consists
of a storage pond and seven spray fields.
The LAS
storage pond has a total capacity of 70 million gallons. Under normal
operating conditions, the pond provides approximately 30 million gallons
of storage, which represents 12 days of storage for a treatment plant
rated at 2.5 million gallons per day.
The Wastewater
from the storage pond is delivered through a network of pipes to one
of seven spray fields. Each field includes a total area of approximately
42 acres and contains approximately 500 individual spray heads. The
treated wastewater is applied to pine trees that are planted throughout
the LAS spray fields.
Wastewater
Treatment Plant
6th Street S. W.
(229) 378-3098
The City
of Cairo Wastewater Treatment Plant receives sewage from the City of
Cairo and provides treatment by several different basic processes before
it is pumped to the City of Cairo Land Application Site (LAS). These
processes include preliminary treatment and secondary treatment.
Preliminary
treatment is accomplished by using equipment such as a communutor and
bar screens to remove rocks, rags, sand, and similar materials which
may hinder the operation of the treatment plant.
Secondary
treatment process consists of two activated sludge package plants that
are permitted to treat an average of 2.5 million gallons per day. This
process is a type of biological treatment process followed by secondary
clarifiers that allow the solids to settle out from the water being
treated. The solids are removed from the clarifiers and are treated
by a digester before being dried on sludge drying beds. The dried sludge
is ultimately disposed of in the City of Cairo Landfill.
The treated
effluent is pumped through a force main from the treatment plant site
to the LAS storage pond, where it is stored until it can be pumped to
spray fields for application to the land as a final treatment process.
