The
City of Cairo Energy Services Department employs 37 full-time employees
and one part-time employee.
The City of Cairo provides the following services:
Electric
Division
The City of Cairo provides electric power for residential, commercial,
and industrial customers inside the city limits and for customers outside
of the city limits. The city’s service territory is governed by the
Georgia Territorial Act with the exception of customers with electrical
loads of 900 KW or greater. The City of Cairo is a member of the Municipal
Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG) and is a shareholder in four existing
power plants and three Combustion Turbine plants under planning and construction.
Natural
Gas Division
The City of Cairo provides natural gas for residential, commercial, and
industrial customers inside the city limits and for some customers outside
of the city limits. Natural gas is available for those customers needing
supplies on a firm basis as well as on an interruptible basis. The City
of Cairo is a member of the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia (MGAG)
and has its own propane-air peak-shaving plant to mitigate spikes in the
wholesale natural gas market.
Support
Services Division
This division provides for the support functions of purchasing, warehousing,
electrical meter testing, and numerous other vital areas.
Administration
Division
This division provides for the customer billing and other administrative
functions. Customers paying their utility bills may elect to do so by
visiting our building at 100 2nd Street S. W. using our drive-thru facilities,
including drop-box facilities, or use the U. S. Postal Service.
Telecommunications
Division
This division is responsible for providing the city’s Cable TV services
as well as the city’s internet services. The cable TV offering includes
both analog and digital layers. The internet offering is via high-speed
modems.
