Job Description
Position Title: Part-Time Communications Coordinator
Pay Rate: $1600 bi-weekly
Department: Administration
Reports To: City Manager
FLSA Status: Part-Time (Non-Exempt)
Work Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week (flexible schedule based on operational needs)
Position Overview
The City of Cairo is seeking a creative, organized, and proactive communications professional to serve as the City’s primary storyteller and public information coordinator. This position is responsible for producing clear, consistent, and engaging communications that help residents understand city services, projects, policy updates, and community accomplishments.
This role serves as an “army of one” communications function, requiring a professional who can independently plan, create, and execute communications across multiple platforms while collaborating with city leadership and departments.
Key Responsibilities
Public Information & Storytelling
- Develop and publish press releases and public announcements related to city projects, employee achievements, ordinance updates, and major initiatives.
- Translate operational or technical information into clear, resident-friendly messaging.
- Support transparency by ensuring timely and accurate public communication.
Content Strategy & Weekly Planning
- Collect weekly updates from City directors and transform operational activity into structured communication plans.
- Maintain a rolling content calendar to ensure consistency and balance across topics.
- Prioritize high-impact stories and public information needs.
Video & Digital Storytelling
- Produce at least one short video per week highlighting city projects, departments, council members, or community initiatives.
- Capture and edit content that showcases the work being done across the City.
Social Media & Community Engagement
- Manage and schedule social media content promoting city announcements, events, holidays, and public information.
- Maintain a professional, consistent brand voice across digital platforms.
- Monitor engagement trends and recommend adjustments to improve reach.
Monthly City Newsletter
- Plan, write, design, and distribute a monthly newsletter highlighting city progress, department updates, upcoming events, and community information.
- Coordinate submissions and supporting materials from departments and leadership.
Marketing & Promotional Support
- Identify opportunities to elevate awareness of city programs and events.
- Assist in building campaigns that encourage community participation and support local initiatives.
Expected Outcomes (Performance Metrics)
Success in this role is measured by consistent execution and quality of communication, including:
- 3–7 press releases or major announcements per month
- 1 short informational video produced and published weekly
- Consistent weekly social media activity (3–5 posts minimum)
- Monthly city newsletter published on schedule
- Timely communication of ordinance or policy changes
- Increased visibility of city services and accomplishments
Minimum Qualifications
- Three to five years of experience in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or related field.
- Strong writing and editing abilities with attention to clarity and accuracy.
- Experience managing digital content and social media platforms.
- Basic video editing and graphic design skills preferred.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- Government or public-sector communications experience preferred but not required.

Working Environment
