The City of Cairo created, within the Cairo Police Department, the City Marshal position in June 2025 to better serve our citizens by ensuring compliance with city ordinances, providing specialized enforcement support, and acting as a direct link between residents, businesses, and city government.
Role and Responsibilities
The City Marshal works under the direction of the Chief of Police and serves as an essential part of the Cairo Police Department’s mission to maintain safety, order, and quality of life. Duties include:

City Ordinance Enforcement
Enforcing all municipal ordinances, such as property maintenance, parking and truck route regulations, and other local codes. -
Business and Licensing Compliance
Verifying that businesses within the city operate in accordance with required licenses and permits. -
Special Event Oversight
Assisting with permitting, crowd management, and compliance checks during festivals, parades, and other public gatherings. -
Court Liaison Duties
Serving summonses, citations, and other legal documents on behalf of the Municipal Court and the City Clerk's Office. -
Community Engagement
Responding to citizen and local business owners concerns regarding ordinance violations, general concerns, and questions. -
Collaboration with City Departments
Working with the City Clerk, Public Works, Code Enforcement, and other departments to resolve issues affecting public safety and community standards.
